When T2 becomes fully operational in November 2010, Dublin and Shannon Airports will be unique outside the American continent, in offering US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities. CBP will allow all departing passengers to the US to clear not only US immigration, a service that has been available for some time, but also full US customs and agriculture controls. The benefit of this service to passengers is that, having collected their luggage at their US airport of arrival, they can move quickly to their next destination without any further processing requirement. CBP will also allow airlines to access a broader range of domestic airport terminals and indeed domestic airports in the US, which should reduce their operating costs. The CBP facility, which will be operated by US personnel, will be located on the ground level of Pier E. Passengers, having cleared CBP, will remain in departure lounges at this level before ascending to the mid-departures level of the Pier to board their aircraft. Should CBP officials require to inspect a passenger’s luggage before departure, the baggage system in T2 has been designed to enable that luggage to be located and delivered to the CBP facility within minutes. |
